Bitcoin Network Energy Consumption Estimate Explained
In order to estimate the daily energy usage of the network, we use this formula:

Formula
\text{Annualized Energy (GW)} = \frac{\text{Daily Hashrate (TH/s)} \times \text{Efficiency (J/TH)} \times 8760}{1000}
Formula Explanation:
- Daily Hashrate: The total computational power of the Bitcoin network in terahashes per second, averaged over a day
- Efficiency: The energy efficiency of mining hardware in joules per terahash
- 1000: Conversion factor to convert from watts to gigawatts
To even more accurately estimate the daily energy usage of the network, we plan to update the efficiency coefficient to change based on the hardware used at the time.
